Drought relief – cash for carcass initiative Kunene

Central Kunene relies on farming and wildlife as their primary drivers of the economy, the effects of the drought are devastating. Grazing is depleted, there is no market, animals are in extremely poor condition, and dying. Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation (IRDNC) and its partners raised funds and purchased cattle from rural farmers in nine conservancies, the meat from the animals was distributed to the most vulnerable residents in the area, including school children and pensioners. The Foundation contributed towards the initiative, the project paid for 274 carcasses. The farmers select his/her cattle that could not reach the next rainy season, they register the cattle, the farmer slaughtered his/her cattle and received payment for the carcass.
